Let’s take a look at the differences of an orthodontist practice cash discount program vs a surcharge program.

When a payment is due, the patient will choose whether they want to pay cash or credit. The terminal then will automatically do the following:

 

With an orthodontist surcharge program, your cash pricing remains the exact same. Nothing changes. When a patient chooses to use a credit card, there is a non-cash rate adjustment added to the total of +3.5%.

With an orthodontist practice cash discount program, if your patient chooses the cash option, your pricing would be reduced by 3.5%. When a patient chooses to use a credit card, there is also a non-cash rate adjustment added to the total of +3.5%.

 

An important consideration is that currently when you take credit cards, your net deposit is minus the processing fees. So on average, for every $100 charged, you receive roughly $96.50. You are essentially passing the money which goes to the credit card companies to your patient if they choose to pay with cash.

 

With both credit options when adding the non-cash rate adjustment, you’re not profiting from this but rather covering costs.

When a patient chooses to pay with cash at the terminal,
